Weekend Reads

During a recent break from homeschooling, I treasured additional reading time.  It is a personal favorite past time of mine to peruse books, any kind really, including nonfiction, poetry, fiction, and many picture books with the children.

Preferring to read more than one (grown up) book at a time, I requested three books from the library to start during our break.  One turned out to be a flop, and I already returned it.  The other two are being slowly absorbed, and I hope to finish both this weekend.  The first is How Should We Then Live? by Francis Schaeffer and the second is Reluctant Entertainer by Sandy Coughlin.  Both have my mind whirling, but for completely different reasons.

In How Should We Then Live?, Schaeffer examines the history of western thought and culture.  He applies these historical roots throughout the ages to modern times in thought provoking ways.  His writing is explanatory, but meaty.  Despite its publishing date of the 1970's, I still find the material applicable for the current culture.  Simply put, it is a must read for me.

Another current read, for me, is Reluctant Entertainer.  Coughlin, honest and forthright, urges readers to offer true hospitality emphasizing relationship building rather than events or meals.  Her friendly writing style and encouragement have motivated me to view hospitality in new ways.  She has a blog which has the same warm, inviting tone as well.

To round out my reading, and replace that third library book that was a flop, I am reading for the first time Anne of Green Gables.  For many years, I have watched the movie, loved the story line, and have shared it with my children, but now, for the first time, I am reading the actual book.  It has not disappointed.  A fun read to balance out the other two books.

Have you read any of these books?  If so, what are your thoughts?

Have you read any good books, and would like to recommend a title or two?
