Her mind is sharp, narrating and answering all my questions correctly.
Her smile grows wide. Laughter echos in my ears. "Hey, Mom," she turns to me, "do you remember when I thought...?" She recounts a conversation we shared a few years ago.
"Yes," I reply as we share in the laughter. "I remember..."
~ The remembered conversation from a few years ago when she was in Kindergarten ~
"Mommy, is God the son?"
"Yes, honey. Jesus is God's Son and Jesus is God. So, yes, God is the Son." I absently answer her as I stir the simmering pot on the stove top.
"So, the Egyptians were right?"
"What?" She has my full attention now. I turn to face her. "What was that you said?"
"The Egyptians were right. They worshiped the sun."
"Oh." I begin my simple explanation. "No, honey, they worshiped the sun in the sky."
"Yes, the sun. That's God."
"Not quite. I meant son like your brother is Daddy's son, not the sun in the sky. Jesus is God's son. God is His Daddy."
"Oh, I thought God was the big sun in the sky. A big fire watching over us."
"Well, you are right. He does always watch over us," I am grateful to explain,
"but He is not the ball of fire sun that rises and sets each day in the sky."
Not wanting to confuse a five year old any further, silently, I ponder:
Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire. Hebrews 12:28-29 |

Our English language with words that sound the same do pose difficulty when learning, doesn't it? Wonderful memory for the two of you...and your daughter is simply adorable! That smile is so contagious!
ReplyDeleteToo cute! It is so sweet and fun to hear how kids process our language - son and sun. For a second I thought she was going to tell you about how the Egyptians worshiped the trinity of Osiris, Isis, and Horus. I think I would have fallen off my chair to hear a kindergartener say that. Even a little girl as smart as your. :) LOL
ReplyDeleteOh, it gets so complicated, doesn't it? My 6 year old asked me how come we have 3 gods. I think I did a pretty good job explaining the Trinity to a 6 year old. I hope so, anyway. Otherwise, I just unintentionally put my son on a path to perdition.
